Abstract
840,236. Fluid actuation of switches. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Dec. 19, 1957 [Dec. 20, 1956; March 7, 1957], No. 39458/57. Class 38 (5). A device responsive to rapid changes of fluidpressure comprises a fluid motor connected by an unrestricted conduit to the fluid inlet, a second fluid motor connected by a restricted conduit to the fluid inlet, a movable member biased to a neutral position and connected at its opposite ends to the fluid motors and a device actuated by movement of the member from its neutral position. As shown, the fluid inlet 13 is connected by a conduit 14 to one side of a piston 11 and by a conduit 43, having a variable restriction 16, and conduits 17, 57 to the other side of a piston 12. Piston 11 acts directly on one end of an axially-slidable member 18 and piston 12 acts on the other end of the member through a conical spring 19. The member 18 is formed with cam surfaces 74 which co-operate with a follower 81 mounted on a control member 21 actuating a snap-action switch 22. The ends of the pistons 11, 12 are sealed to the casing parts 26, 27, 28 by flexible diaphragms 29, 31, respectively, and chambers 39, 63 formed between the parts 27, 28 and the diaphragms may be connected to a low-pressure drain conduit. A by-pass containing a non-return valve may be provided around the restriction 16 so that the device is only responsive to a pressure change in one direction (Fig. 3, not shown).
