Abstract
840,023. Circuits employing bi-stable magnetic elements. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Nov. 14, 1958, No. 36705/58. Class 40 (9). [Also in Group XL (c)] Two similar magnetic cores 1, 2 having rectangular hysteresis characteristics have a triggering pulse from a further core 11 applied to their windings 3, 4, the pulse being of such amplitude and duration that only one of the cores is able to reverse its magnetization. Both cores are biased in opposite senses by windings 7 and 8, while core 1 has an input winding 5 which is wound in opposition to the trigger and bias windings on that core. An input pulse from a source 17 is applied to core 1 at the same time as the triggering pulse, and if this pulse exceeds a certain threshold value core 2 is reversed by the triggering pulse and a positive pulse is supplied by an output winding 10 to a gate 24. If the input pulse is below the threshold value or is absent, core 1 is reversed by the combined effect of the triggering pulse and the bias, and a negative pulse is supplied by an output winding 9. The core 11 is sequentially reversed by a sine wave current from source 16 in a winding 12, this source also controlling the gate 24 so that spurious outputs due to restoration of core 11 to its initial state are cut-off from output 23. Modifications are described in which the bias winding 8 is omitted or an additional input winding is provided on core 2. A number of the circuits described may be employed as sampling circuits 30-34, Fig. 3, in a five-digit-pulse decoder, the coded signals being received from a digit source 17 in serial form and read-out in parallel form on leads 40- 44. The presence or absence of each pulse in the serial code is then indicated by a positive or negative pulse, respectively, on the appropriate lead. The threshold property of the sampling circuits prevents response to spurious signals. As shown, the trigger pulse acting in a sampling circuit is applied over a delay circuit 35-39 from a common sine wave source 16, and the output is registered in a store 45-49. The five consecutive pulse positions of a coded digit occur during the positive half-cycle of the source 16, and the delay circuits are progressively graded so that each consecutive pulse position is coincident with the trigger pulse output from a corresponding delay circuit. In this arrangement the gates 24 are omitted from the sampling circuits and their positive or negative outputs, as the case may be, are registered in turn in the associated store. A readout device 50 is activated during negative halfcycle of source 16, and this causes all the stores to be read-out simultaneously whereby a pulse output is obtained in each lead 40-4.
