In a disc brake two brake discs 5, 6 are mounted for axial movement on a fixed carrier 4 and are spread apart by balls or rollers 10 acting in inclined recesses in a rotatable brake operating ring 12 and inclined recesses in the inner surface of only one brake disc 5 ; the other side of the brake operating ring 12 and the inner surface of the other brake disc 6 each merely comprise a smooth raceway for receiving supporting balls or rollers 15 which are held spaced from one another by a ball or roller cage 14. The disc brake operating ring 12 is provided at its inner periphery with a toothed segment 16 in which engages a pinion 17 fixed to an operating shaft mounted on the brake carrier 4 and connected to a brake operating lever 18.
