Abstract

839,674. Rotary-scythe mowers. TORO MANUFACTURING CORPORATION. April 22, 1958, No. 12818/58. Class 6(3). [Also in Group XXIV] An overload slip coupling for use between the vertical crank-shaft C of a rotary-scythe mower and its blade B comprises a ring 14 of synthetic rubber, &c., bonded to an inner sleeve 10 keyed to the crankshaft and diametrically compressed within a driven cup-shaped member 13 which it frictionally grips, screws S securing the blade B to the cup-shaped member. Keys 10a securing the sleeve 10 to the crankshaft C are held in position by a washer 11 and a screw 12 threaded into the end of the shaft, a slot 15 transverse to the length of the blade B embracing the end of the screw 12 and a similar slot 13b at the end of the cup-shaped member 13 embracing the shaft. Lips 16 at opposite sides of the cup-shaped member 13 grip the sides of the blade B. When the mower blade strikes an obstruction, the driven cup-shaped member 13 slips relatively to the rubber, &c., ring 14 which it frictionally grips, and the slots 13b, 15 in the cup-shaped member and the blade allow the axis of rotation of the blade to move with respect to the axis of the driving crankshaft C.
