Abstract

839,551. Switches held set and freed mechanically. SIMPLEX ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Aug. 12, 1957 [Aug. 11, 1956], No. 24635/56. Class 38 (5). [Also in Group XXXV] An energy regulator of the type which periodically breaks the circuit for variable intervals is further provided with an additional means to modify the on-off ratio to increase the initial flow of current. The regulator which may be of the thermal or motor-driven type comprises contacts 13a, 13b, which in the latter case are axially displaced by a cam 18 driven from a synchronous or clockwork motor through a gear train. A further gear train rotates. a clutch member 36. The other clutch member 42 rotates freely on a shaft 28 and is pushed into engagement by a spring 43, and a peg 33 transmitting thrust from an inclined track on a cam 34, 35, the two parts of which are connected by a ratchet, part 35 being rotated by a knob 29. In addition, knob 29 determines the on-off ratio by the axial positioning of contact 13a through a further cam 27. The sequence is established by rotating knob 29 fully anti-clockwise and then clockwise to the setting required. This rotates cam member 34 unidirectionally causing peg 33 to ride up the track engaging the two parts of clutch 36, 42, which drives the peg back to its original position, during which time a pair of contacts 14a, 14b in parallel with contacts 13a, 13b and coupled to clutch assembly 30, 42, 43 are closed. Contacts 13a, 13b may alternatively be actuated by a thermally responsive bimetallic element. A thermostatic switch is provided to open the circuit should the oven temperature become excessive due to manual operation of knob 29 when the oven is hot. Contacts 14a, 14b may be eliminated if a suitable linkage is provided to hold contacts 13a, 13b closed during the initial warming period, and the variable time setting may be replaced by a fixed time setting by incorporating a further ratchet to give a fixed angular displacement of member 34 irrespective of the angular rotation of knob 29. Specification 818,371 is referred to.
