Abstract

839,464. Magnetic recording &c. apparatus. LOEWE, S. July 19, 1956 [July 21, 1955], No. 22330/56. Class 40 (2). A sound recorder has the reels carrying the magnetic tape driven by friction couplings during high-speed running of the tape, the couplings being engaged by means of ball and socket joints the balls of which are out of contact with the sockets during normal running of the tape. For high speed running of the tape 1 to the left a lever 22 (Fig. 1) is depressed to engage the ball 24 with the socket 20 and a lever 23 is raised to engage the ball 25 with the socket 21 so that a disc 4 carrying the reel 2 is pulled into engagement with a disc 8 driven by the motor 10. The tape is driven at high speed to the right by raising the lever 23 and lowering the lever 22 to rotate the disc 5 carrying the reel 3. For normal running of the tape the levers are left in the position shown to disconnect the discs 8, 9 from the discs 4, 5 so that the tape is driven by the capstan 14. The pressure roller 37 (Fig. 2) for the capstan is mounted on a slide 39 having a brake block 38. The slide is moved to the position S to disconnect the pressure roller so that the tape may be run at high speed. The slide is moved to the position St to brake the reels. In a modification (Figs. 6-8, not shown) two oppositely rotating capstans are provided and the pressure roller is pivotally mounted on the slide to permit quick reversal of the tape drive. In the modification shown in Fig. 9 the capstan comprises contra rotating rollers 55, 56 connected to flywheels 57, 58 driven by a friction wheel 60, the whole of the capstan being movable vertically by a cam 63 on a shaft 64. The discs 4, 5 are coupled to the belt-driven discs (not shown) by downward pivoting of the levers 71, 72 by cams 69 mounted on the shaft. One end of the shaft carries a lever 75 which is connected by a link 77 to the slide 39, the arrangement being that the lever may rotate the shaft and reciprocate the slide. Movement of the lever to the positions NL, NR causes the pressure roller 37 to press the tape 1 on to the appropriate roller 55, 56 to give normal running of the tape to the left or right, the capstan being raised or lowered by the cam 63. Movement of the lever to the positions SL, SR moves the roller 37 and operates the levers 71, 72 so that the appropriate reel is driven and the tape moved at high speed to the left or right. When the lever 75 is returned to the stop position the brake is applied. The lever 75 may be held in its operative positions by magnetic forces or by springs. In a modi. fication the guide 76 for the lever 75 has two channels parallel to the centre line and leading from the positions NL and NR so that the lever may also control the operations of reproduction and recording. In a further modification (Fig. 13, not shown) the lever 75 in its operative positions closes contacts which energize solenoids to actuate the various parts of the recorder. In another modification a switch operated by the tape reverses the direction of tape movement as the end of a spool is reached.
