Abstract

839,350. Fuel injection pumps. PETTERS Ltd. Sept. 12, 1958 [Sept. 18, 1957], No. 29360/57. Class 102(1). A fuel injection pump comprises a pump plunger 7 provided with a spill passage 9 controlled by a sleeve 8a connected by a bridge member 13 to a spring loaded piston member 11. A tappet 21 secured to the plunger is provided with ports 23 through which fuel flows from the inlet and is pumped past a non-return valve (not shown) to the spill chamber 3. A needle 20 of an adjustable needle valve 6 is secured to the piston member 11 and controls the leakage of fuel from the spill chamber 3 to the inlet chamber 4. As the pressure in the spill chamber rises, due to increased engine speed, the piston 11 is moved against its spring 12 and moves the sleeves 8a to allow more of the fuel to spill from the injection chamber 10. However movement of the piston 11 also moves the needle 20 to increase the escape of fuel from the spill chamber until a state of balance is reached i.e. the engine runs at a constant speed determined by the setting of the valve 6. Any variation from this speed results in a change of pressure in the spill chamber to vary the position of the sleeves 8a. The extent of movement of the piston 11 in one direction is controlled by a rotatable cam-member 14 which may be adjusted to provide increased fuel for starting.
