Abstract

839,275. Electrolytic cells. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. May 8, 1958 [June 21, 1957], No. 14727/58. Class 41. In a cell for the electrolysis of aqueous solutions of chlorides or of hydrochloric acid having vertical graphite plate electrodes a facing each other and a diaphragm c between each pair of electrodes defining anode and cathode chambers d, e, the anode chambers d being filled with lumps of carbonaceous material e.g. graphite, obstacles are provided in the cathode chambers e to diminish the speed of ascent of hydrogen given off at the cathode faces of the electrodes a, preferably to an extent that the speed corresponds with the speed of ascent of chlorine at the anode faces. The obstacles may be lumps of graphite or other carbonaceous material, or ceramic bodies, e.g. hollow cylinders or balls, or the cathode face of each electrode may have oblique parallel grooves h, Fig. 2, with interconnecting grooves l in the intervening ribs i, the diaphragm lying on the ribs. Electrolyte is delivered vertically downwardly to the cell.
