838,609. Lawn mowers. McLAUGHLIN, J. C. June 21, 1957, No. 19693/57. Class 6(2). A lawn mower comprises a frame 2 supported by a roller or a pair of wheels 8, a final drive shaft 5 carrying a rotary cutter 1, and a handlebar 32, 33 which may be fixed in, in selected positions to vary its height and carries a manually-operated crank handle 36 for driving the cutter 1, the roller 8 being freely rotatable at all times. Drive to the cutter 1 is through a pulley 28, belt 29, intermediate pulley 27, shaft 24, and pulley 22 which drives a pulley 21 on the shaft 5 by means of a belt 23. A castor wheel 9 supporting the front of the frame 2 is carried on the forked extension of a head 12 carrying a post 13 rotatable in a sleeve 14, secured to the side plates 3 of the machine, for adjusting the height of the cutter 1. A free-wheel device is interposed between the pulley 27 and shaft 24. The handle bar 32, 33 is adjustable by means of a telescopic tube 38. Sprocket wheels and chains may replace the belt and pulley mechanism ; or meshing gears may be used. An extension 5a of the shaft is for fitting a rotary edge trimmer.
