838,468. Batteries. PRITCHETT & GOLD & E.P.S. CO. Ltd. Oct. 21, 1958 [Nov. 27, 1957], No. 36954/57. Class 53. A separator for a storage battery, made of microporous ebonite, polyvinyl chloride or other thermoplastic material is subjected to heat and pressure over certain areas to reduce the thickness and permeability. A pressure of 100 lb. per square inch may be applied for about one second by platens heated to 100‹ C. The compression may be applied across the top edge of the separator to restrict the current flowing to and from the top edge of the positive plate, or all four edges of the separator may be compressed to protect the edges of the positive plate and to hinder the transfer of antimony to the negative plate. Fig. 4 shows a part of a grooved separator which has been compressed at one end. Specification 783,729 is referred to.
