Abstract

838,461. Discharge tubes. UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Oct. 6, 1958 [Oct. 10, 1957], No. 31760/57. Class 39(1). A discharge device for producing nuclear reactions by bombarding a target material with hydrogen ions comprises a hydrogen-bearing anode 2 and a trigger electrode 3 for initiating a transient discharge between the anode and an earthed apertured electrode 4 when a spark is passed between the anode and trigger electrodes. The hydrogen ions, deuterons or tritons, pass through the apertured electrode to strike the target 7, comprising a deuterated or triticated surface 8, to produce neutrons. The aperture 5 may be a central hole or a number of small holes. The anode may include a block 6 formed by cold-pressing a mixture of lithium deuteride and copper powder, or deuterated titanium or zirconium rod may be provided instead of the block 6, or the anode may be covered with zirconium deuteride powder or with lithium deuteride mixed with copper powder or aluminium. Tritiated instead of deuterated materials may be used to produce tritons.
