Abstract
838,137. Respiratory appliances. NORMALAIR Ltd. Dec. 23, 1958 [Sept. 25, 1957], No. 30027/57. Class 81 (2). A respiratory appliance has a mask 10 connected by a tube 6 to a breathing bag 5. This is supplied with breathable gas from a cylinder 1 through a valve 3, controlled by the expansion and contraction of the bag. An exhalation valve 16 is connected to the tube 6 between the mask and the bag and is loaded by a light spring. With this arrangement the initial part of the exhalation, which is relatively free from CO 2 , passes into the bag and inflates it before the pressure is sufficient to open the exhalation valve. When this pressure is reached, however, the latter part of the exhalation, which has a high CO 2 content, passes out through the valve. On inhalation, the contents of the bag are first rebreathed, followed by such additional gas as is admitted from the cylinder 1. The valve 3 is preferably of the type in which a head is tilted off its seating by the engagement of a long, inclined stem, attached to it, with the opposite face of the bag, when this is drawn inward.
