Abstract

837,951. Testing strength of hollow bodies. WHESSOE Ltd. July 17, 1958 [July 31, 1957], No. 24271/57. Class 106 (2). A body to be tested, e.g. the pressure vessel of a nuclear reactor, is filled with liquid under pressure and at the same time is immersed partly or completely in liquid. A preliminary test of the vessel is made with air supplied by a compressor 6. The vessel is then filled with water through a pipe 10, stand-pipes 24, 25 being closed after the water has overflowed from them, and a vent 26 being used to remove air from the very top of the vessel. At the same time the space between the biological shield 4 and the vessel is also filled with water through a pipe 11. By this means, the additional thrust on the supports 3 is relatively low. After being filled, pressurized water is supplied through a pipe 18, careful observation being kept on a pressure-gauge 20, on which leakage is indicated by a sudden fall in pressure. In modifications, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), the water in which the vessel 1 is immersed is contained in a steel tank erected within the biological shield 4.
