Abstract

837,527. Testing bearings. GENERAL RAILWAY SIGNAL CO. Aug. 11, 1958 [Sept. 30, 1957], No. 25690/58. Class 12 (1). [Also in Groups XXX and XL (c)] An improperly lubricated axle bearing on a railway vehicle emitting high-frequency sound signals is detected in passage by a directional electro-acoustic transducer positioned adjacent the track, and the position of its associated wheel relative to the other wheels of the vehicle or train is recorded. High-frequency sound signals emitted by the axle bearing are received by the directional transducer (microphone) 23, Fig. 1, the resulting electrical signals are amplified and passed through the band-pass filter 25 to remove signals outside the frequency range in which the bearing signals fall. The filter output is rectified to produce a D.C. pulse of a duration which is a function of the speed of movement of the wheel through the transducer beam ; this triggers the pulse former 27 to produce a pulse of fixed duration to energize relay DR. The associated contact 29 operates and a signal is recorded on one track of the dual track tape recorder 30; additionally the alarm bell 31 is operated. During the passage of each wheel, switch arm 13 is deflected thereby closing contacts 14 and 15 and energizing relay WC. Via the associated contact 32 a signal is recorded on the other track of the tape recorder. By inspection of the record the location of an axle bearing which is improperly lubricated can be determined.
