Abstract

837,487. Etching. BIRMETALS Ltd. Aug. 7, 1958 [May 8, 1957], No. 14607/57. Class 100(2) Apparatus for etching curved surfaces comprises means for supporting and traversing a surface to be etched, elongated projecting means extending parallel to the surface to be etched for the full dimension in a direction transverse to the direction of traversing and adapted to project medium with substantially uniform force in paths spaced along the elongated projection means. Paddles 4 splash etching medium 5 against a baffle 7 and thence upwards against a cylinder 9 through a slot 13 in a mask 12, surplus medium returning through slots 14. Elongated projecting means 15 comprising pipes with rows of perforations or slots direct medium against the cylinder radially or in a direction inclined towards the direction of rotation of the cylinder, which is rotated or oscillated by an electric motor. Similar projecting means 16 project a dispersing fluid such as air against the cylinder to cause trickles of etching medium moving circumferentially down the cylinder to form into a more or less unified flow. The projection means 15, 16 are carried on a housing 19 which is reciprocated by rods 20 slidable in stationary bearings by a crank. In another form, the projecting means are annular and are spaced axially along the cylinder which is axially reciprocated and may also be rotated or oscillated, alternate projecting means projecting etching medium and dispersing fluid. The apparatus may be used as auxiliary mechanism attached to the apparatus disclosed in Specification 725,110.
