Abstract

A molybdenum or Mo-base alloy (e.g. 99% Mo-1% Ti), body is coated with alternate layers of a fuzed brazing alloy consisting of Cr 11-25%, Si 2-12%, Fe up to 8%, B up to 3.5%, remainder Ni and impurities, and an oxidation-resistant metal consisting of Cr or Ni-Cr alloy, the inner-most and outermost layers being of brazing alloy, and the coating having a total thickness of 5-10 mils. The brazing alloy layers should be 0.5-2 mils thick and are produced by applying a slurry consisting of, by weight, 12-55 parts finely divided alloy and 10 parts 10% aqueous CaCl2 and heating in a reducing atmosphere at 1050 DEG -1100 DEG C. to fuze the alloy, the CaCl2 acting as a flux. The oxidation resistant metal layer(s) should be 1-3 mils thick, Cr being applied by electrodeposition and Ni-Cr (e.g. 80% Ni-20% Cr), by flame-spraying. The resulting coated Mo body may be used as a bucket, blade, valve or nozzle in a gas or steam turbine or jet engine.
