Abstract

836,879. Flexible hose pipes. HANSSENS, G. J. J. July 2, 1956 [Oct. 21, 1955], No. 30197/55. Class 99(2). In a method of making a hose pipe capable of being rolled flat, a fabric tube 11 is coated internally with a suspension dispersion, or solution of a thermoplastic polyvinyl compound and a tube 10 of thermoplastic polyvinyl compound is inserted therein, the tubes being heated by external heating means to unite the tubes through the medium of the coating compound, and, during the heating, being rotated around the common longitudinal axis thereof. There may be an outer tube 12 of a thermoplastic compound, and the fabric tube may be of glass fibres, wholly or mainly of rayon fibres and may contain up to 50% of other artificial fibres such as nylon or perlon, or the tube may be wholly or mainly of fibres of a polyester such as " Terylene" (Registered Trade Mark) or mainly of a polyamide such as nylon. Impregnation of the fabric tube may be effected by filling the tube with an emulsion of polyvinyl chloride and passing the tube between a pair of squeeze rollers to force the emulsion into the interstices of the fabric. As shown, the assembled hose is threaded into a braided support tube 14, of wire or textile threads, one end of which is clamped to a rotatable tube 24 driven by a motor 25, the other end of the tube being attached by a clamping device 26 to a cable 28 tensioned by a weight 36. The free end of the hose is sealed by a plug 50 and compressed air is admitted through a conduit 31 to the hose. An infra-red oven 34 traverses the rotating hose for which forked supports 40 are provided, these supports being spring-urged to an upright position and deflected downwardly by the oven as the latter passes along the hose. After bonding of the layers of the hose, the tube 14 is removed. To permit the escape of air present between the tubes of the hose the outer tube is perforated by passing the tube between a pair of rollers having radial pins ; the fabric tube 11 may be dried before or after the impregnation thereof. To reduce deterioration of the fibres of the fabric tube, an opacifier such as aluminium powder or a pigment such as titanium oxide, or a mixture thereof, is added to the impregnating material ; alternatively, or in addition, an opacifier is incorporated in the cover tube 12. In modifications, the fabric tube and lining are bonded together without the use of the tube 12 which is applied subsequently either as a liquid coating or by wrapping sheet material around the fabric tube and securing the sheet by adhesive, or by the use of heat and pressure, and the heating of the hose is effected by a heated pressure fluid, or the layers of the hose are bonded together by external pressure by supporting the hose on an internal mandrel and contracting a braided outer tube on to the hose. To protect the end of the fabric tube, the end edges of the hose are covered with an extra layer of thermoplastic material, or the ends of the hose are turned back and covered with such a layer. Specification 836,878 is referred to.
