Jointing by stamping; force fits.-A method of making an expansion joint for pipe lines comprises providing a cylindrical tube of ductile metal, placing about said tube spaced from the ends thereof at least one smooth-surfaced ring 16 of uniform circular cross-section and applying fluid pressure internally of said tube to force the wall of the tube outwardly on each side of the ring to form convolutions 12 embracing said ring. Each reinforcing ring is formed from tubing the ends of which are connected by a plug 20 (Fig. 5), provided with bevelled snap rings 24 which locate in complimentary grooves inside the tubing when assembled. The ends of the tubing are bevelled to facilitate assembly. In another embodiment, each reinforcing ring comprises a pair of endless mating ring members 40, 42 (Fig. 11), which are clamped about a copper or stainless steel tube 44 by dies 46 and 48. Fluid pressure is introduced into the tube to form convolutions 50 and 52 which embrace each ring and hold it permanently in position. Expansion of the tube may be effected in stages with intermediate annealing heat treatment steps.
