Abstract

Polymeric materials are produced by masticating a mixture comprising a polymer that is not rubberlike at room temperature, a polymerizable olefinic compound, a solid which is not dissolved in the mixture and, if desired or necessary, a plasticizing solvent, the selection of the constituents for the mixture and the relative proportions being such that the mixture is rubbery at the temperature of mastication and, if necessary or desired, oxygen being partially excluded during the mastication. Polymers specified are polymethyl and polybutyl methacrylates, polyvinyl butyral, a styrene-butadiene copolymer, ethyl and benzyl celluloses, a diphenylol propane-epichlorohydrin polycondensate and Congo copal. Olefinic compounds specified are methacrylic acid, methyl methacrylate and styrene. The solid material may be carbon black, powdered metals and alloys, metallic oxides, peroxides hydroxides, carbonates, percarbonates, chlorides, sulphides, sulphates, sulphites, nitrates, nitrites and phosphates, borax, iodine pentoxide, silica, starch and a thermoset melamineformaldehyde resin.
