A hoe for clearing weeds on either side of a plant row, comprises two discs or wheels 24 supported in a downwardly facing manner with their axes mutually inclined and also rearwardly inclined from the vertical, each disc or wheel having a depending ground engaging peripheral flange 34, adjacent portions of the flanges of the members being spaced apart sufficient to travel one each side of a plant row. The discs 24 are mounted in a frame 33 attached to a chassis 20 and provided with counterbalancing springs 35 so that the discs are urged into the ground by movement of a handle 37, which is also used to steer the chassis by means of cables 43 connected to the mountings 45 of front wheels 26. Hoes are mounted on shafts 52 connected to the chassis by arms 54 and links 55 so that considerable movement of the frame 33 causes one of the hoes to move to an ineffective trailing position. The discs may be mounted in a manually propelled wheeled frame or they may be mounted in a frame adapted as a unit for mounting on the rear of a tractor and a series of such units may be gang mounted for hoeing a number of plant rows. The discs are shown as being rotated by contact with the ground, although a drive may be provided to them if necessary.
