Abstract

A dry electrographic printing ink pigment comprises free-flowing aggregates of diameter 3-120 microns comprising discrete particles of pigment (carbon black specified) coated and bonded together with a polymer organic resin in the proportion of 5-500 parts resin per 100 pigment; the pigment particles must have an electrical resistivity at par density across a bed one inch in depth not in excess of 100,000 ohms at any relative humidity. The ink pigment may be prepared by forming a sprayable dispersion of the finely-divided pigment and resin in the correct proportions in a volatile liquid atomizing the dispersion of a droplet size such that all thereof on evaporation of the volatile liquid will be 3-120 microns in diameter, suspending the droplets in hot gases of sufficient heat capacity to evaporate all the volatile liquid, thereby forming dry, solid aggregates of pigment and resin.ALSO:A dry electrographic printing ink pigment comprises free-flowing aggregates of diameter 3-120 microns comprising discrete particles of pigment coated and bonded together with a polymeric organic resin in the proportion of 5-500 parts resin per 100 pigment. By resin is meant any natural or synthetic rubber, e.g. latices of natural rubber, butadiene-styrene, or latices of polyvinyl acetate polyvinyl chloride or polyethylene, while the pigment particles must have an electrical resistivity at pour density across a bed one inch in depth not in excess of 100,000 ohms at any relative humidity. Carbon black is the specified pigment. The ink pigment may be prepared by forming a sprayable dispersion of the finely divided pigment and resin in the correct proportions in a volatile liquid, atomizing the dispersion of a droplet size such that all thereof on evaporation of the volatile liquid will be 3-120 microns in diameter, suspending the droplets in hot gases of sufficient heat capacity to evaporate all the volatile liquid, thereby forming dry solid aggregates of pigment and resin.
