Abstract

Colour changes, penetrating the surfaces of polymer plastics are produced by exposing areas of such surfaces to high energy of which the monomer contains chlorine as a constituent element, radiation such as X-rays, alpha particles, gamma rays and high energy electrons. The colour change so produced may be applied to indicating the amount of radiation received by materials which are to be exposed to selected doses of high energy radiation, by the inclusion, adjacent to the material and in the path of the radiation, of a piece of a polymer plastic which undergoes a visible colour change on exposure to substantially the selected dose. Polymers such as polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride and chlorinated rubber are particularly suitable for treatment and initially-coloured material may be used; sheets, films, coatings, plastic-impregnated paper, filaments and woven fibres may be treated. The irradiation may be effected through a stencil, or a pattern may be produced by manipulating an electron beam; sheet material may be treated in the form of a stack or roll, giving multiple patterning.ALSO:Colour changes penetrating the surface are produced in vinyl and vinylidene chloride polymers and copolymers and in rubber hydrochloride by exposure to high energy radiation such as X-rays, alpha particles, gamma rays and high-energy electrons. The colour change so produced may be in a pattern and may be used to indicate radiation dose of the material or of other material or articles with which it is associated.
