In a gas-cooled (or liquid-cooled) nuclear reactor the fuel elements and fertile elements are small moulded bodies of the same shape (e.g. spheres or cylinders) and of such a size (e.g. 3 cm. diameter) that they remain essentially at rest while the coolant flows through the loose accumulation of elements, so that the pressure drop in the coolant is fixed and not excessively large. The power needed for coolant circulation is less than 30% of the gross electrical power generated. The elements are continuously renewed and used elements are removed by devices such as worms or shaking grates.
