Abstract

834,708. Drills. MATTHEWS, G. B. Aug. 15, 1958 [Sept. 3, 1957], No. 27755/57. Class 83(3). In a drill for drilling deep holes in coal &c., longitudinal flutes 14 collect and pack cuttings therebetween so that a steadying effect is obtained. A sectional rod, having screwthreaded spigots 15, is connected by an Archimedean-screw 17. Each section of the rod has the flutes 14 attached thereto, and one section also carries a detachable cutter 10, secured at 12 by a screw. The flutes, which may be parallel to the axis of the drill or helical, extend radially to coincide with the radius of the cutter. As an alternative, the flutes may be mounted on a detachable sleeve.
