Abstract

Compositions of homopolymers or copolymers of aliphatic olefines are prepared by adding phosphorus trichloride to a mixture of sulphur and polymer at above 140 DEG C., or alternatively by adding sulphur and phosphorus trichloride portionwise, alternately or simultaneously to the polymer, the mol. ratio of the total amounts of sulphur to phosphorus trichloride used being at least 1:1. Polymers of ethylene, propylene and isobutylene and copolymers thereof with minor proportions of styrene, substituted styrene and butadiene, preferably of M.W. between 250 and 3000, are used. The products may be after-heated with water, e.g. as steam; alcohols, such as methanol, 2-ethyl hexanol, ethylene glycol, glycerol and butanediol; phenolic compounds; basic alcoholates and metal compounds such as sodium hydroxide, barium and calcium oxides; and bases such as ammonia, ethylene diamine, n-butyl amine, octadecyl amine, pyridine and piperidine. The salts, esters, amides and metal salts so produced may be used as surface-active agents, e.g. in asphalt emulsions, dispersant agents in lubricating mineral oil, as heat and light stabilizers, e.g. in polyvinyl chloride, insecticides, paint-driers and plasticizers.
