Class 120(1) A machine for the preparation of cotton for spinning includes carding and combing sections B, C, Fig. 1, in the latter of which a cotton fleece is delivered from a preparatory box 1 to a laminating box 2, the latter box comprising a feed roller G<SP>2</SP> and nippers GN and a pair of rollers L<SP>2</SP>, L<SP>2T</SP> one of which is driven forwardly and rearwardly by a mangle wheel motion whereby the fleece is drawn without combing and a detached section is laid as a flat sheet upon a preceding sheet, the staggering of the sheets being equal to the amount of delivery from the box at each cycle to a laminating combing box 3. Carding. As shown Fig. 1 cotton is fed from a hopper A by pin boards p<SP>1</SP>, P<SP>2</SP> to a carding section B comprising a series of carding rollers R<SP>1</SP>, R', W<SP>1</SP>, W<SP>2</SP>, W<SP>3</SP>. The fibre is passed progressively along the series of rollers, excess fibre being returned to preceding rollers by rollers R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>4</SP>, R<SP>5</SP>, W<SP>5</SP>, W<SP>6</SP>, W<SP>7</SP>, W<SP>8</SP>. Cleaning is effected by a dust-extractor D<SP>1</SP>. Fibre passes from roller W<SP>3</SP> to a doffer W<SP>4</SP> which is stripped by an oscillating comb OS. Doffer W<SP>4</SP> is divided lengthwise to produce a number of separate fleeces which pass over and under a rod c and are combined in pairs for feeding to a drawing and combing section C comprising a "preparatory box" 1, a "laminating box" 2 and combing boxes 3-5. Lap-forming. In box 1, Fig. 2, the fleece is fed between rollers L', L'A having alternate feed and reverse motions with a small net feed movement, so that the fleece is repeatedly folded on itself to form a fleece with successively overlapping folds. A roller L'B moves forward to take up the fleece during the feeding motion of roller L<SP>1</SP>. The fleece delivered by box 1 is fed to box 2 which is provided with a feed roller G<SP>2</SP> nippers GN, GSN and oscillating rollers L<SP>2</SP>, L<SP>2T</SP> and operates to draft, detach and overlap sections of fleece as in a rectilinear comb, but without any combing action. The resultant lap is delivered rearwardly by roller L<SP>2</SP>. Combing. The lap or fleece delivered by box 2 passes in succession through one or more combing boxes 3, 4, 5, operating as rectilinear combs with rearward (as shown, Fig. 3) or forward delivery. The combing cylinder CC<SP>1</SP> or CC<SP>2</SP> is half the usual-diameter and makes two revolutions per cycle, one for combing and the other for cleaning by a brush E or E<SP>l</SP>. The combed fleece is finally delivered by rollers K. K', Fig. 1.
