Abstract

A bone mixture for application to incisions to enhance clotting and for use as a bed or filler between bone sections in general surgery and dentistry consists of pulverized viable non-human animal bone and a plasma clot as a binder for the said pulverized bone, the plasma clot substance, e.g. blood plasma, being obtained from the same species of animal, but not necessarily the same animal, as that from which the bone is obtained. Bone is preserved according to the method of Specification 827,746 by removing bone from a healthy, non-human animal body under sterile conditions and placing the removed bone in a container having therein an antibiotic such as penicillin or a sulpha drug such as sulphadiazine, and blood plasma or blood serum from the same species of animal from which the bone was removed. Bones may be from domestic animals, e.g. sheep, bovine, hogs, dogs, cats and horses. The bone so preserved is divided into small pieces, by e.g. sawing, and is then pulverized without cauterization in a grinder or mixer, and is then mixed with the plasma clot substance under sterile conditions at about 40 DEG F. In the presence of the bone, the blood plasma forms a clot, the calcium from the bone reacting with the prothrombin and thromoplastin from the blood plasma to form thrombin which in turn reacts with the fibrinogen of the blood plasma to form fibrin. A suitable gel is formed with 10 parts of bone and 1 part of plasma clot. If not used immediately, it must be maintained under sterile conditions at 40-50 DEG F. Preferably the mixture is enclosed in an osmotic membrane immersed in blood plasma.
