Abstract

834,021. Controlling light flux. BAILEY METERS & CONTROLS Ltd. July 17, 1957 [July 17, 1956], No. 22073/56. Class 75(4) Means for producing a light flux which remains constant, or' which varies in a desired manner, with limited variations in the degree of energization of an electric lamp or lamps, comprises a light source including at least one incandescent electric lamp, light attenuating means adapted on movement to attentuate the light flux in a selected direction and an automatic adjusting means responsive to variations in the degree of energization of the lamp which adjusts the position of the movable member of the attenuating means. In the form shown, light from the source 1 reaches a lens 3 by way of two superposed plates 5, 6 having sets of parallel slits 7, 8, the plate 5 being fixed and the plate 6 movable so as to vary the overlap of the slits. The plate 6 is carried by springs and connected at one end to a former 16 carrying a helical coil 23 about half of which lies within an annular space in a permanent magnet 18 of the type having a central pole 18a and an annular pole 20. The coil is connected in parallel with the lamp through a metal rectifier, a smoothing condenser being arranged in parallel with the coil. It is also possible to connect the coil in series with the lamp in some cases. The moving plate can be provided with radially extending slots and be mounted to rotate about an axis at right angles to its surface. Alternatively, the Light attenuating means may consist of a set of parallel louvres which move from a position where they offer little obstruction to the light flux into one in which they completely obstruct the light.
