A thread pull-off comprises a wheel formed from two members having interengaging radial arms angularly disposed to provide a V-shaped groove therebetween, said members being adjustable relatively to each other to alter the effective diameter of said groove, and being mounted on a shaft adapted to be turned step-by-step by a ratchet and pawl. The pull-off wheel comprises disc-like members 16, 17 having radial arms which interengage angularly to form a circumferential groove. Said members are slidable on a square portion 18 of a shaft 7 journalled in a bracket 6, a spring 18a disposed between the members biasing a leather washer 19 secured to member 16 against bracket 6, and biasing member 17 against a nut 21 rotatable on a screwed extension 22 of shaft 7. A ratchet wheel 8 fast with shaft 7 co-operates with a pawl 9 pivoted to a ring 10 journalled on shaft 7. Ring 10 is connected by a rod 13 to the strap 14 of an eccentric 11 of the cam shaft 12 of a linking machine. Eccentric 10 normally operates the arm 15 carrying an oscillating needle 24. Thread 3 pases from a disc-type tensioner 3, through a pair of guides 26, 27 to the pull-off wheel, and from the latter through a thread guide 23 mounted on a spring arm 25 to the needle 24. Rotating nut 21 in one direction or the other controls the rate of thread feed, overrun of the thread being prevented by the frictional resistance of washer 19.
