Abstract

833,537. Blades for turbines, compressors and fans. HOLSET ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. April 12, 1957 [Aug. 30, 1956], No. 12002/57. Classes 110 (1) and 110 (3). In a rotary bladed machine through which a gaseous fluid flows, such as an axial- or radialflow turbine or compressor, at least a part of each stator vane or blade is formed of two or more metals having different coefficients of thermal expansion which are rigidly connected together so that changes of temperature of the gaseous fluid will cause a change in the shape of the vane or blade. The assembly shown in Fig. 1 is either the inlet nozzle guide vane assembly of an inward radial flow turbine or the diffuser guide vane assembly of a centrifugal type compressor and comprises two end walls 1, 2 with vanes 3 secured therebetween. The vane 3 in Fig. 3 has the radially inner portion 7 formed of bi-metallic construction, lugs 5 being provided to enable the vane to be secured between end walls 1 and 2 with clearance therebetween. In Fig. 4 both the radially inner end 7 and the radially outer end 8 of the vane are of bi-metallic construction, whereas in Fig. 5 the whole of the vane is of bi-metallic construction, this vane having fixing lugs 9. Various constructions of vanes of aerofoil section profile embodying bi-metallic portions are described. In one, the trailing edge portion is of bi-metallic construction, whereas in others the leading and trailing edge portions, the mid-chord portion and the whole profile respectively are of bi-metallic construction. In Fig. 12 the blade comprises a concave wall portion 3b and a convex wall portion 3a of different metals joined together at their leading and trailing edges 19, securing pins 18 being fixed to the inner surface of the concave portion 3b. In Fig. 13 concave and convex wall portions 3b, 3a respectively are secured together at the trailing edge 22 and to a solid leading edge portion 14 at 21, mounting pins 18a being formed on the portion 14.
