Abstract
833,329. Indicating and measuring displacements photo-electrically. HILGER & WATTS Ltd. April 23, 1956 [April 22, 1955], No. 11753/55. Class 40 (3). [Also in Group XXXVI] Apparatus for measuring, indicating or controlling mechanical displacements of a member, such as, for example, a tape 5, Fig. 1, or a micrometer head D5, Fig. 5, the member being provided with an array of contrasting patches PI, P2, P3, &c. arranged according to a suitable code to indicate its displacement from a datum position P0 at which it is viewed by a line of photo-electric cells, such as BS5 in Fig. 5, is characterized by the use of miniature photo-conductive cells constructed as described in Specification 685,288. The invention reduces the size of the measuring apparatus and, by permitting the photo-electric cells to be placed closely adjacent the member, avoids the need for optical apparatus, such as glass rods, to image the code pattern patches on the cells. The cell outputs are applied to suitable circuit means IM for indicating or controlling the displacement of the member. Reference is made to the use of means for punching cards to indicate the displacement. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 5, two lines of photocells BS5 and BS5<1> are provided viewing duplicated patterns of patches 0, 1, 2, 3, &c., P0, P1, &c. and the member carries a guard ring GR formed of patches situated astride the separating lines between the code patterns 0, 1, 2, 3, &c. The guard ring is viewed by an additional photo-cell GC5<1> controlling a changeover relay R, and the arrangement is such that the indicating or control means IM is always connected to that line of photo-electric cells which is viewing the code pattern uniquely, i.e. without overlapping an adjacent pattern. The patterns of patches are arranged according to a binary code and the Specification discusses suitable codes. A method of constructing a unitary assembly of photo-electric cells for use in the invention is described (see Group XXXVI).
