A easing C contains ultra-violet lamps arranged to direct rays through apertures 11 and 12 into the mouthpiece and earpiece of a handset 10 placed on a support 9 on top of the casing. A manual switch 16 may be provided, or, alternatively, the device may be automatically switched on when the handset is placed on the support 9. A bar (not shown) is used to depress the telephone cradle-switch during the absence of the handset.
