Abstract

A surgical dressing comprises fibre which, at least in part, is a compound of alginic acid with a physiologically active basic substance, the resulting product being insoluble in water but soluble in body fluids. The product is an alginate and the active substance may be, for example, diethylaminoethyl - p - aminobenzoate (procaine) and, in the examples given, calcium alginate fabric is converted into alginic acid and subsequently immersed in a solution of the active substance to form the alginate. The substance may have antiseptic, anaesthetic or antibiotic properties. Specification 653,341 is referred to.
