Abstract
832,707. Paper marked by pressure. UARCO Inc. April 15, 1957 [Aug. 3, 1956], No. 12209/57. Class 96. The surface of paper to be marked by pressure is covered with particles of darkcoloured matter, e.g. pitch from a petroleum base, magnetite, pyrolusite, chromic oxide, or cadmium red, each particle being coated with a pigment of light colour, e.g. titanium dioxide, optionally with a thin film of colourless wax between, to facilitate adhesion between the two pigments. The coated particles withstand ordinary handling but are crushed under the impacts of typing to expose the dark-coloured matter. As illustrated, dark particles P from an agitated bath 4 of wax solution are deposited on a conveyer 8 on which they are heated to 100 C. to drive off solvent from their wax coating. They pass through screens 10 to break up or remove agglomerates, and fall through a tower 11 containing titanium dioxide smoke, to a conveyer 15, through screens 16 and on to a travelling web of paper 27, particles not adhering being returned to the screen 16. In a modification, the two kinds of particles are intermingled and rolled together between a stationary and a rotating plate, heat being supplied to melt the wax coating.
