Abstract

832,546. Wire &c. winding apparatus. STANDARD MACHINERY CO. March 28, 1957 [April 3, 1956], No. 10243/57. Class 120(2) [Also in Group XXVIII] In the wire &c. winding apparatus of Specification 824,695 each reel carries a wire or stock anchor of generally circular form having a peripheral rim on which one or more turns may be wound, and peripheral guard means for preventing the wire or stock from flying outwardly, the guard means being so constructed as to allow ready removal of the cut off ends when the wound reel is in the reel exchange position. As shown the anchor 48 is removably mounted on the reel spindle 74 and is coupled with the reel R through pin 250. It has a hub 242 connected by a plurality of radial spokes 244 to an annular border 246 which continues as a frusto-conical stock deflector flange 248. Secured to the border 246 are equi-angularly spaced brackets 256 provided with ledges 258 which together form a stock winding-on rim 260. Outwardly spaced from the ledges 258 on the brackets 256 are lugs or detents 262 which serve to block any appreciable outward expansion, and hence unwinding of stock turns on rim 260. The detents 262 are preferably inclined inwardly toward the deflector flange 248 so that their outer surfaces 264 will serve to deflect stock on to the flange 248 and then into winding relation with the rim 260. The arrangement is such that when one reel is fully wound and the stock quickly transferred to the empty. reel, the wire is first caught and a few turns wound on the anchor of the full reel and then on the anchor of the empty reel, prior to winding thereon. The length of stock between thetwo reels is then severed. Alternatively to the above the wind-on rim may be continuous and cylindrical or it may be shaped to produce a .wedging action on the stock so as to prevent it flying outwardly. Also the anchor unit may be permanently or releasably attached to the reel.
