Abstract

A method of nitriding ferrous metal articles comprising covering the parts of the articles which are not to be nitrided with a lacquer containing finely powdered tin and then subjecting the articles to a nitriding process. The lacquer may comprise dewaxed shellac in solution in methylated spirits, with or without up to 5% of butyl alcohol, having dispersed therein 60-80% of tin of particle size finer than 300 mesh. A dye may be added to the lacquer to colour the parts not to be nitrided.
