831,200. Planimeters. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO. Ltd. Oct. 7, 1957 [Oct. 26, 1956], No. 32728/56. Class 106 (1). Apparatus for measuring small areas comprises an optical magnifying device movable parallel to co-ordinate axes for tracing the area to be measured and a planimeter coupled thereto through movement-magnifying means so as to give a reading proportionally related to the required area. As described, a microscope is adjustable parallel to perpendicular axes by micrometer screws, one of which rotates a drum 8 round which is passed a belt driving a carriage 2 along a fixed rail 3, and the other of which drives a further belt arranged to move a table 1 in a direction at right-angles to the rail 3. The tracing point 10 of a planimeter is pivoted to the carriage 2 and the normally fixed point 9 is pivoted to the table 1, so that in relation to the table, the point 10 traces out an area similar to that traced by the microscope but enlarged. The carriage 2 may carry writing means. In an alternative arrangement, the carriage 2 and table 1 are driven by a pair of electric motors which also drive the micrometer screws of the microscope. The apparatus is particularly applicable to the examination of worn cutting tools and a clamp may be provided for such a tool.
