Abstract
A dispersion of collagen in a suitable dispersion medium is prepared by a process in which as an initial step, finely divided collagen is purified by removal of non-collagenous material by p enzymatic digestion. Extraneous matter may be physically removed from mammalian collagenous tissue, e.g. fresh tendons, hides, and the tissue then treated with a solution of an enzyme capable of acting on and dissolving non-collagenous substances, for a period of at least 10 hours at between 5 DEG and 45 DEG C. and pH 5 to 9, prior to dispersing the separated material in a dispersive medium, e.g. aqueous acid such as acetic or malonic acid. Collagen may be obtained by precipitation from the dispersion by addition thereto of an acid neutralizing agent, e.g. ammonia, or collagen strands may be formed by extrusion of the dispersion into an acid neutralizing bath, e.g. acetone containing ammonia. Specified enzymes are malt diastase, pancreatin, and microorganisms of the B. subtilis group.ALSO:Strands of collagen are formed by extrusion of a dispersion of collagen into an acid-neutralizing bath, e.g. acetone containing ammonia, the dispersion having been formed by a process in which, as an initial step, finely divided collagen is purified by removal of non-collagenous material by enzymatic digestion. The dispersion may be formed by physically removing extraneous matter, e.g. muscle and fat, from mammalian collagenous tissue, e.g. fresh tendons or hide, and treating the tissue with a solution of an enzyme capable of acting on and dissolving non-collagenous substances for a period of at least 10 hours at between 5 DEG and 45 DEG C. and pH 5 to 9, prior to dispersing the separated material in a dispersive medium, e.g. an aqueous acid such as acetic or malonic acid. Specified enzymes are malt diastase, pancreatin, and micro-organisms of the B. subtilis group.
