Abstract

830,917. Removing metal by electro-erosion; broaching. SPARCATRON Ltd., and RUDORFF, D. W. A. F. Aug. 21, 1957, No. 26413/57. Classes 83 (3) and 83 (4). In the shaping, polishing or grinding of a workpiece by spark or arc-erosion, the electrode is in the form of an endless belt 5 which, in the vicinity of the workpiece 17, passes over a shaped former 10 for imparting the desired contour to the work, The latter is mounted for universal adjustment on supports 16, 14 in a tank 12 to which a bathing fluid, particularly a dielectric, is circulated through pipes 22, 23. The belt 5 runs over insulated pulleys 6, 7, 25, and former 10, which is adjustable towards and from the work by a split-field electric motor 21 and is connected to the negative side of a power source, the work being connected to the positive side. The former may be a revolving pulley 10 on a stationary guide 31, Fig. 2 (not shown); its transverse contour may be convex or concave or may have re-entrant and protuberant portions. Belt 5 may be of metal or metallized fabric such as woven or braided wire or tape. Alternatively, it may be of rubber or rubber-impregnated fabric 35, Fig. 3, preferably with one side metallized, having metal staples 36 passing therethrough with their projecting ends towards the work; metal studs or rivets 38, Fig. 4 (not shown), may alternatively be used. Broaching. The ends of the staples or rivets may have abrasive contact with the work to supplement the spark-erosion operation. In this case the dielectric film is broken during abrasive working, and the electric supply is disconnected. The former 10 and/or the work may be vibrated during the erosion operation. A cover 4 is provided for the belt. The invention is of particular use in the manufacture of turbine or compressor blades. Specifications 637,872, 756,727 and 780,242 are referred to.
