Abstract

Thermosetting aminoplastic copolymers are prepared by copolymerizing compositions comprising (1) at least one unsaturated-alkylated-urea-aldehyde resin, and (2) at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer or partial polymer of such a monomer. As components (1) there are used resinous reaction products of a urea-type amino compound, e.g. urea, thiourea, biuret, dicyandiamide, and/or guanidine, an aldehyde, e.g. formaldehyde, acetaldehyde benzaldehyde, and/or unsaturated aldehydes such as acrolein or crotonaldehyde, and an unsaturated aliphatic alcohol, e.g. allyl, methallyl, crotonyl, linoleyl and/or linolenyl alcohol. As components (2) there are used for example vinyl acetate, diallyl phthalate monomer and prepolymer; the methyl, ethyl, n-butyl, isobutyl, 2-ethoxyethyl, nonyl and lauryl esters of acrylic and methacrylic acid; unsaturated acids and anhydrides such as maleic anhydride, methacrylic, itaconic and fumaric acid; monoalkyl esters of dibasic unsaturated acids; styrene, methylstyrene, vinyltoluenes, and chlorine-substituted derivatives thereof; unsaturated polyester-alkyd resins and mixtures of these with other unsaturated materials such as esters and partial esters. The copolymerization of the mixture may be carried out by bulk, solution, or emulsion polymerization processes, with the application of heat, and/or the addition of catalysts, e.g. methyl ethyl ketone peroxide or benzoyl peroxide, promoters e.g. cobalt naphthenate, inhibitors, e.g. hydroquinone, driers and/or accelerators, if desired. Plasticizers and modifiers, e.g. high-boiling esters, polyesters, plasticizing alkyds, unsaturated polyester alkyds, drying and semi-drying oils, acids and alcohols therefrom, oil-modified alkyds, styrenated drying oils, natural rubber, terpenes, air-drying amino-triazine based compositions, and/or styreneated oil-modified alkyds may be added at any stage during manufacture. According to the degree of copolymerization the products may be used for coating and impregnating compositions in solution or emulsion form, for casting, moulding and laminating compositions, adhesives, and the manufacture of articles such as foils, films and monofilaments.
