Abstract

Tantalum and/or niobium are recovered from mixtures containing their oxides together with other oxides by extracting the tantalum and niobium in the form of fluorides by means of a ketone containing hydrofluoric acid. The ketone is preferably methyl isobutyl ketone or methyl ethyl ketone. The process may be carried out either by passing the ketone containing HF through the mixture, or by stirring the mixture into the ketone containing HF, or by dispersing the mixture in the ketone and then adding HF. The ketone extract may then be treated with water, which may contain HF, in order to obtain an aqueous niobium-rich phase and a ketonic tantalum-rich phase.
