Abstract

An aqueous acidic solution for producing coatings on metallic surfaces contains hexavalent chromium, fluoride, and at least one condensed phosphate in an amount not exceeding 0.5% W/V calculated as the condensed sodium phosphate. Condensed phosphate is defined as the condensed phosphoric acids and their alkali metal and ammonium salts in which the mole ratio of cationic oxides (including water of composition), to anionic oxides is greater than 0 and less than 3. Hexavalent chromium may be introduced as chromic acid, alkali metal dichromate, ammonium dichromate or as the dichromate of zinc, calcium, cadmium or aluminium; fluoride may be introduced as hydrofluoric acid, sodium bifluoride, sodium fluoride + sulphuric acid, or as a complex fluoride of aluminium, titanium, zirconium, boron, silicon or iron, e.g. potassium titanium fluoride, potassium zirconium fluoride, fluoborate, and hydrofluosilicic acid; and specific condensed phosphates mentioned are disodium pyrophosphate, tetrasodium pyrophosphate, sodium tripolyphosphate and sodium hexametaphosphate. The solution may also contain nickel sulphate and ferrous sulphate. The acidity of the solutions is adjusted during operation by the addition of nitric acid. Metals which may be coated are aluminium and alloys thereof, iron and alloys thereof, nodular graphite iron, galvanised iron, zinc and alloys thereof, and magnesium and alloys thereof. The coatings are stated to form a good basis for paint, and for adhesives used in applying plastic sheets to metal surfaces.
