830,567. Moulding chains. KETTENWERKE SCHLIEPER G.m.b. H. Nov. 4,1957 [Nov. 5, 1956 ; Sept. 28, 1957 ; Oct. 9, 1957], No. 34355/57. Class 87(2). [Also in Group XXV] A chain is made from fibrous material wound in ring shape and bonded with a thermosetting substance. Each link may be covered with wear..resistant plastic material, which may comprise the mould in which the link was wound. As shown, a glass fibre 20, Fig. 4, after passing through a bath of thermosetting material (not shown), is wound into a chain link by rotation of a mould 10, 11 provided with a slot round its periphery for the passage of the fibre. The mould may comprise two U-shaped parts, or (as shown in Fig. 4), each half may be further divided longitudinally and joined by clips 17. Alternatively the mould may be divided longitudinally only, Figs. 15, 16, in which case each half has a cut-away portion 32a, to enable it to engage the preceding link, and may have a projection 33a engaging with the cut-away portion of the other half. The moulds may be expendable, (e.g. of sand), or they may be reused, or they may be left on to form an outer casing for the links. In the latter case they are formed from a synthetic material which is insoluble in water and resistant to wear, and adheres to the bonding substance. If the bonding substance is a polyester, polyvinylchloride is preferred for the casing. Friction-reducing substances such as graphite and molybdenum sulphide may be added. The chain links may be circular, and of any desired cross-section.
