Class 75(2) To provide for better illumination of the nearside of the road, a vehicle headlamp, of the kind providing a dipped beam from an axial helical bulb filament shielded from below and disposed in advance of the focus of a parabolic reflector, has its cover glass formed, only on the upper offside quadrant, with a compound prism 3 comprising a circumferential prism 6, concentric with the lamp glass centre to elevate the rays of the dipped beam, and a radial prism 7 superimposed thereon to deflect the elevated rays towards the nearside of the road. As shown, the compound prism is formed on the outer peripheral zone of the quadrant, and the radial prism 7 is in two steps 4, 5. The surface of the compound prism may have dispersing flutes or ridges 15 which are effective in a direction parallel to the offside cut-off line of the beam, said line being depressed from the horizontal nearside cut-off by suitable ridgings of the cover glass separated along the regions 13, 14.
