Abstract

A gear finishing tool is made by forming a mould from a representation of a master gear, and moulding the tool in the mould thus formed. A plastic model of a gear is formed, together with a model of a conjugate gear of a hard resilient plastic with abrasive particles embedded in the teeth, the models rolled in mesh to remove material from the plastic model as a result of the action of the abrasive particles, and a mould formed from the plastic model, in which is moulded a tool having teeth at least the surface portions of which are hard resilient plastic material in which abrasive particles are embedded. The models are rolled in mesh preferably by driving one of them first in one direction and then in the other and opposing rotation of the driven member, e.g. by brake action. The invention is particularly useful in the finishing of bevel, spiral bevel, or hypoid gears having crowned teeth. In such a case initial contact between the teeth of the plastic gear and the plastic abrasive tool is limited to a zone central of the teeth but as the two are rotated in mesh the teeth of the plastic gear become longitudinally concave and capable of contacting the teeth of the abrasive tool from end to end. The final gear finishing tool is a counterpart of this modified plastic model gear and accordingly its teeth are longitudinally concave by an amount sufficient to cause them to engage substantially uniformly from end to end with the crowned teeth of a metal pinion and to finish the teeth of this pinion from end to end. The tool may be formed in its entirety of the hard resilient plastic material or may have a disc-shaped metal core and plastic teeth. The metal disc may have short teeth which extend partly into the plastic teeth. Suitable plastic materials are epoxy casting resins in which 60 grit abrasive such as silicon carbide is incorporated. The moulds may also be made of epoxy resins but it is preferable to use a material of higher heat resistance, e.g. phenolic resins such as phenol formaldehyde and phenol-furfural compounds or polychlorotrifluoroethylene, so that the epoxy resin may be heated during moulding.
