A machine for tamping railway ballast comprises a main frame, at least one pair of carriers for tamping tools, a tool carrying structure movable upwardly and downwardly with respect to the main frame, means for moving the tool carriers towards and away from one another and motor driven means for vibrating the tools, the tool carriers being mounted on a vibrating framework, vibrated by a revolving eccentric mass, the framework being connected to the tool carrying structure by elastic components. As shown a monorail machine has rail engaging rollers 3 mounted on a frame 4 which supports, by means of pistons 6 and cylinders 7, a tubular structure 9. Tubular frameworks 13 are suspended from the structure 9 by elastic damping blocks 12, the frameworks 13 comprising horizontal tubes 13a connected at their ends by tubes 13b of inverted U-shape to the ends of which are pivoted tamping tools comprising telescopic rods 16, 17 and arms having spurs 20. The free ends of the telescopic rods are connected to the piston 21 of a piston and cylinder arranged so that upward movement of the piston forces the spurs towards one another and downward movement separates them. The structure 9 carrying the tools is vibrated by a vibrator 23 comprising a rotating eccentric mass. The height of the tool carrying structure is adjustable by means of the piston and cylinder arrangements 6, 7 and the machine may be locked to the rails by clamps 28 and springs 29. Two machines may be used, in parallel, one on each rail, and may be operated pneumatically or hydraulically.
