Abstract

827.983. Regulating. MERRYWEATHER & SONS Ltd. Oct. 24, 1957 [Aug. 22, 1956(2)], Nos. 25656/56 and 25657/56. Class 7(6) [Also in Group XXIX] The output of a pump is varied automatically in accordance with the demand. A fire engine has a vehicle engine driven pump 1 supplying liquid through a line 5 to hydraulic motors for operating a ladder mounted on a turntable. A combined unloading and relief valve 4 is biased to its closed position in which it acts as a relief valve by pressure in a pilot line 3 which is connected to .the supply line 5. A foot operated valve 2 when not actuated opens line 3 to an exhaust line 13 and valve 4 then functions as an unloading valve, pump output passing via a line 10 and throttle 16 to a sump 11. Closing valve 2 causes valve 4 to close and function as a relief valve, the pressure in line 5 rising to a value determined by valve 4 and excess liquid passing via line 10 to exhaust. Pressure in line 10 acts on a piston 17 operating a power controlling member 19 of th engine through a lever 20 so that increasing pressure in line 10 results in a decrease of engine speed. To ensure that the engine will idle when the pump is unloaded, lever 20 is pivoted on a movable fulcrum 21 controlled by a piston 22 subject to the pressure in line 5. When the unloading valve is open piston 22 moves lever 20 to the retracted position in which the engine idles irrespective of the position of piston 17. The system can be adapted to operate with a constant speed prime mover employing a variable delivery pump, the pump capacity or the speed ratio of a variable speed gear being varied in accordance with the pressure in the line 10. The hydraulic motors (not shown) are connected to the supply line 5 and to a return line 6, a multi-way rotatable connection 7 allowing rotation of the turntable.
