Abstract

827,694. Cold separation of air. UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION. Feb. 11, 1958. No. 4493/58. Class 8(2). In a two-stage air rectification process wherein crude argon is passed from an intermediate level of the low pressure column 21 through a conduit 62 to an argon rectification column 63 reflux for column 21 additional to that normally supplied from the base of the high pressure column 20 through a valved conduit 25 and from the nitrogen shelf 24 through a valved conduit 28 is provided by a pump 76 drawing liquid oxygen from the base of the low pressure column 21 through a duct 77 and delivering through a duct 78 to the head of said column thereby more effectively washing out the argon content of the ascending gas. In operation compressed air having been cooled in one or other of cold accumulators 12, 13 is washed with liquid air in a scrubber 17. The liquefied portion is forced by a pump 36 through one or other of filters 37 e.g., silica gel towers and a portion thereof added to the reflux leaving the base of column 20 whilst the remainder is returned through a duct 38 as scrubber liquid. Part of the unliquefied scrubbed air is fed through a duct 19 to the base of the high pressure column 20 whilst the remainder is partly condensed in a condenser 40 to provide washing liquid whilst the uncondensed portion is warmed in exchangers 49, 50 in countercurrent to partly cooled incoming air bled from the exchangers 12, 13 prior to expansion air a turbine 56 and at a valve 59 before passing into the low pressure column 21. Argon product gas is discharged from a condenser 65 at the head of column 63 and passes through a duct 70 leading to passes 71, 72 in the accumulators 12, 13 and thence to an outlet 73. Liquid oxygen product is bled from the duct 78 through a valved duct 80. In a modification liquid nitrogen is also discharged from the shelf 124, Fig. 2 (not shown), after being subcooled.
