Abstract

A product obtainable from methylol compounds of mono- or poly-valent phenols, polynuclear phenols or phenol resins by condensation with sulphites and/or bisulphites is ememployed as a tanning agent. The syntan may be produced in the presence of an alcohol or an aldehyde and/or a ketone. Example 1: a mixture of phenol and cresol is condensed in presence of sodium hydroxide with formaldehyde, sodium bisulphite and methanol added, the mixture heated, cooled and aftertreated with urea. Example 3: dihydroxy-diphenyldimethylmethane is condensed with formaldehyde in the presence of sodium hydroxide and sodium metabisulphite. Example 4: phenol is condensed with formaldehyde in the presence of hydrochloric acid to form a low molecular weight resin which is reacted with sodium bisulphite and formaldehyde in the presence of sodium hydroxide.
