Abstract

827,107. Fishing tackle. MILLET, F. July 9, 1957 [July 19, 1956], No. 21691/57. Class 48. A mechanical device for casting fishing lines, adapted to be attached to a fishing-rod 5, comprises a casing 1 housing a shaft 12 driven by a spiral spring 15, controlled by a hand-operated ratchet mechanism and a small casting- rod 59 mounted on the shaft 12 outside the casing and adapted to be swung in a plane parallel to the longitudinal axis of the fishing rod, the end of the casting rod 59 forming a hook 61 for holding the bait 62. The shaft 12 is rotatably mounted in a sleeve 11 formed on a partition 10 inside the casing 1 and has a slot 13 in which the inner end of the spiral spring 15 engages. The outer end of the spiral spring 15 engages in an aperture 16 in a socket member 17 rotatable in the casing 1 and having a cap 18 closing one end of the casing. The spiral spring is set at different tensions by rotating the socket 17 and engaging a spring- urged pin 20 mounted on the casing 1 in one of a series of holes 19 in the socket. A cam ring 38, a ratchet wheel 32 and an annular member 30 having a finger 29 are secured to the shaft by means of splines 31 and a nut 41. The finger 29 is adapted to abut two shoulders on an apertured disc 25 secured to the partition 10 and thereby determine the limits of rotation of the shaft. The ratchet wheel 32 co-operates with a spring-urged pawl 33, Fig. 5, pivoted on the disc 25 and having an integral operating arm 36 extending through an aperture in the casing. The cam ring 38 actuates a pivoted lever 43 held by a spring 46 on a rounded boss 44 of a button 45 mounted on the disc 25. The lever 43 is made of resilient material and its end outside the casing is curved and presses against the curved end of a fixed resilient blade 49 to form a clamp for holding the fishing line. The small casting rod 59 is slidably mounted in a slideway 56 secured to the outer end of the shaft 12 and a resilient blade 57 secured to the slideway has a nipple 58 which engages in a series of blind holes 60 in the casting-rod 59. The hooked end of the casting rod 59 is offset from its longitudinal axis. The casing is secured to the fishing rod 5 by an elastic strap 8 which is wound round a base 3 of the casing, a reel support and the fishing rod. In operation the casting rod 59 is rotated in a direction to wind up the spring until the finger 29 abuts one of the shoulders of the disc 25. The bait on the end of the line is then attached to the hooked end of the casting rod and the line between the reel and the first guide ring on the fishing rod is clamped between the resilient lever 43 and the blade 49. When the pawl operating arm 36 is pressed the shaft is rotated by the spring until arrested by the finger 29 abutting the other shoulder on the disc 25. The bait, however, disengages from the casting rod and continues its trajectory and at the same instant the cam ring 32 allows the resilient lever 43 to move away from the blade 49 to release the line.
